The Calvert Marine Museum is hosting a Homeschool Day on Wednesday, April 24 from 10:00 a.m. โ 3:00 p.m. Fee is $4 per person for 5-years and up, including members.ย The theme of this springโs day is working on the Water. Homeschool participants are invited to explore a wide range of hands-on activities that focus on our maritime heritage.
Throughout the day on-going activities include building your own wooden toy boat using real tools; trying your hand at navigating a radio controlled model boat; learning how to use signal flags to send a message; using traditional block and tackle to demonstrate leverage; experimenting with prisms to discover how the lighthouse lens works; learning basic nautical knots.
The following 30-minute programs are repeated throughout the day to ensure everyone has an opportunity to try them all:
At 11:00, 1:00, and 2:00 two programs will be offered: โLiving in a Lighthouseโ invites children to learn from a costumed interpreter what life was like for children who grew up in a lighthouse; โWorkboatsโ helps children learn about how traditional workboats were made, what they were made of, why they were designed a certain way, and then to get on and explore one.
At 10:30, 11:30. and 1:30 we will offer โAll About Oystersโ where children can explore the remarkable life cycle of the bivalve and how it has responded to the pressures of modern harvesting; and โNavigation and Mapsโ where children can learn how to read a navigational chart, and compare that to historic maps.
The museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors and military with valid I.D., and $2.00 for children ages 5 โ 12; children under 5 and museum members are always admitted free.
