PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County’s Parks and Recreation Department is looking to add safety netting to the driving range at Chesapeake Hills Golf Course, located at 11352 H.G. Trueman Road, Lusby.
The county took bids for the project and requested $390,000 for the project, to be taken from the General Fund by moving funds over from other county accounts. To fund the project, the Department of Parks and Recreation created two budget amendments, according to a memo submitted by Director of Parks and Recreation Bob Branham:
Budget Amendment BA2026-00730, to move $150,000 from capital project CIP-000446: Finance & Budget Reporting Software.
Budget Amendment BA2026-00732, to move $240,000 from the operating budget.
This project would be treated as a capital improvement project.
The proposed netting is intended to reduce the risk of golf balls leaving the course and to enhance safety for adjacent properties and individuals.
Branham said during the March 17 Board of County Commissioners Meeting that there were six reported incidents in which someone was hit by an errant golf ball during the previous golf season. Part of the issue, he added, is that golfers have gotten better, and the equipment has improved. Golfers can hit the ball harder now, posing a bigger risk for others on the course. At least two holes on the course are within the danger zone of the driving range.
Chesapeake Hills Golf Course is owned and operated by Parks and Recreation and is becoming a popular spot for events and celebrations, especially since the new clubhouse opened, and more people are coming every season.
The BOCC voted to keep the record open for 10 days, after which they will be able to vote on making this project official.
