PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County is getting ready to submit its Program Open Space application to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Department of Planning by July 1, and is currently reviewing projects with the county and its towns.

Each year, the county submits a unified annual program that includes both county and municipal projects on behalf of the towns of Chesapeake Beach and North Beach. The program identifies proposed acquisition and development projects; inclusion does not constitute a funding commitment and may be amended as needed.

Parks & Recreation presented its plans to the Calvert County Planning Commission at their May 20 meeting to ensure they aligned with the county’s comprehensive plan. The Planning Commission approved the plans, readying Parks & Recreation to take the application to the Board of County Commissioners for approval.

Among the POS projects are:

  • Dunkirk District Park — Restrooms | $300k (POS: $150k, Local: $150k)
  • Hallowing Point Park — Pathways & Lighting | $500k (POS: $250k, Local: $250k)
  • Biscoe Gray Heritage Farm — Trail & Stormwater Improvements | $300k (POS: $200k, Local: $100k)
  • Chesapeake Beach: Kellam’s Park Recreational Expansion | $500k (POS: $120k, Local: $50k)
  • North Beach: Waterfront Bike Path Repaving | $193k (POS: $120k, Local: $73k)

Local and POS funding are estimates. According to a memo submitted by Parks & Recreation Director Robert Branham, projects may be funded through the county’s Capital Improvement Program, municipal budgets, POS grants and/or federal funding sources. Approximately $1,874,806 in unencumbered POS funds is projected to be available in FY27.

The presentation outlining POS funds and possible projects is available online.
