COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Two of Calvert County’s softball teams are now Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) champions.

The Huntingtown High School Hurricanes won their state championship game to bring home another 2A state title. Plus, the Northern High School Patriots earned their own 3A state championship following the Hurricanes, making for an exciting night for Calvert fans at the University of Maryland Softball Complex.

The Hurricanes took on the Mt. Hebron Vikings of Howard County. Led by senior pitcher Rachel Howell, the team beat the Vikings 3-1 after scoring runs early in the game. The Vikings made six errors during the game and marked this as their only loss of the season.

This is the seventh state championship for Coach Mike Johnson at Huntingtown High School. Johnson also has four state championship wins as the previous head coach of Northern High School softball. The Hurricanes were last year’s 2A state champions, making them rare repeat winners in Maryland softball.

Johnson thanked the coaching staff and the team for the hard work they put in since March 1. He also called out shortstop Madison Roller for her consistent defense and excellent play during the game.

“They didn’t let the pressure of trying to win back-to-back state championships get to them. They just went out each day and worked toward their goal, and the goal was always to win our last game.”

Northern High School won its game 8-7, making this its first state victory since 2015. Gregory did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

The Patriots came back from a 5-0 deficit against Chesapeake High School of Pasadena. Freshman pitcher Natalie White came in for relief and pitched the rest of the game, while the team worked to get back the runs.

“To have two teams from the county bring home state championships, it really speaks volumes to the level of play we have here in Southern Maryland,” Johnson said.
