Calvert Teen Ties For Second Place At National Finals In Augusta

CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. – Calvert County teenager Luke Gladfelter is still reeling from what he calls “a dream come true.” Gladfelter participated in the Drive, Chip, and Putt National Finals last week in August, Georgia.

Luke hit both drives in play with his longest being 230 yards. He tied for second place in the putting competition and was the only player in his age group to make a putt on the famous 18th green.

“It was electric to get the 15-foot putt in the bottom of the cup and for the place to go wild,” says Gladfelter.

Hundreds of people were there to witness it, applauding and cheering for him, including his parents.

“Kids were trying to get fist bumps from the DCP players while security cleared the way for our group to move down the corridor. It was an unbelievable scene and something I will never forget,” says Luke’s dad, Mark Gladfelter.

Part of the prize of making it to the National Finals was complimentary practice round tickets for the Masters tournament on Monday for the whole family.

“Being able to walk the entire course, interact with volunteers and staff, along with some of the professional tour players was amazing. To share this experience with our entire family was special and something we will never forget,” says Mark.

His mom, Beckie, says they are so grateful for everyone who cheered Luke on throughout the United States.

“It was an unforgettable event for our family. I am proud of the way Luke competed at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club. He finished his competition with a Tiger-like moment when he made the 15-foot putt on the 18th green, and the crowd roared,” says Beckie.

When Luke returned home, he received a citation from Maryland Senator Michael Jackson, congratulating him on his accomplishment.

Luke says that being on the grounds of one of the most prestigious golf courses in the world was truly a dream come true.
