IndyCar Washington D.C. Track

WASHINGTON — For the first time, IndyCar will race through the streets of the nation’s capital Sunday, with the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix bringing the series to Washington, D.C., as part of the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

The 147-lap, 250-mile race will take place on a temporary 1.7-mile street circuit surrounding the National Mall, giving the NTT INDYCAR SERIES a backdrop unlike any other venue on its schedule. Drivers will race past some of the country’s most recognizable landmarks, including the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol.

The historic setting is only part of the story.

For the drivers and teams, the Freedom 250 represents a completely new challenge. There is no previous race data from the circuit, meaning teams must rely on preparation and their ability to adapt to an unfamiliar street course. That could make strategy and execution particularly important throughout the 250-mile race.

The temporary street circuit features seven turns and combines sections of Washington’s streets with a variety of surfaces and tight corners. Drivers will also encounter features uncommon at permanent racing facilities, including brick crosswalks and modified manhole covers. The combination of narrow streets, changing pavement and the walls surrounding the course leaves little room for mistakes.

IndyCar Washington D.C. Alex Palou

Alex Palou enters the weekend as the championship leader and one of the favorites to make history as the first driver to win in Washington. Palou is seeking his fourth consecutive NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship and has built a substantial advantage over the rest of the field with four races remaining after Washington.

Kyle Kirkwood is second in the championship standings and trails Palou by 133 points. Kirkwood has another reason for confidence heading into the inaugural event after winning the first IndyCar race at the new Arlington street circuit earlier this season. He also has been among the strongest performers on street courses this year.

The Freedom 250 could also provide an opportunity for drivers outside the championship fight.

Scott Dixon, one of the most accomplished drivers in IndyCar history, is searching for his first victory of the season. The 46-year-old New Zealander is in his final season with Chip Ganassi Racing and will move to Arrow McLaren in 2027. A victory in Washington would add another significant accomplishment to a career that already includes six championships and 58 series victories.

Josef Newgarden, Will Power and other established IndyCar stars will also be looking to capitalize on the unique opportunity.

The race distance adds another strategic element.

IndyCar originally planned the event as a shorter 125-lap race before extending it to 147 laps to create a true 250-mile event. The added distance will place an even greater emphasis on fuel strategy, tire management and pit stops.

The event also carries significance beyond the championship standings.

Organizers have billed the two-day event as a free motorsports spectacle, with racing taking place against the backdrop of historic American landmarks.

Nearly half of the IndyCar field is also expected to feature special patriotic liveries for the event, adding another layer to a race designed around the nation’s birthday.

For IndyCar, Sunday represents an opportunity to create a new piece of racing history. For the drivers, it is a chance to become the first winner at a circuit that may never return to the series schedule.

When the green flag falls, championship points will be on the line, but history will be the larger prize.
