At 10:14 a.m. on Dec. 12., Officer J. McKenzie was patrolling the area of the Mattawoman Park and Ride on Mattawoman Beantown Road in Waldorf when she observed a man sitting in a vehicle. When she turned around, she saw the man was walking away from another vehicle. The officer approached the man and asked for identification but the man said he did not have any. Officers who responded discovered damage to both vehicles.
The man began pulling at something in his waistband and refused to move his hands when officers ordered him to do so. The man then fled suddenly toward Mattawoman Beantown Road, where he was nearly struck by a vehicle while continuing to grab at something in his waistband. Officer D. Gross apprehended him a short distance away.
The man was identified as Carl Lee Tippett, 31, of no fixed address and was in possession of a screwdriver and a dent puller. Investigation revealed the vehicle he was sitting in was stolen but the theft had not been reported at the time. The damage occurred to the other vehicle when Tippett attempted to remove the door lock.
Tippett was arrested and charged with motor vehicle theft, fleeing and eluding on foot, possession of burglarsโ tools and destruction of property less than $500. He is being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.
