CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — The Charles County Board of Education voted unanimously on Feb. 11, 2025, to reappoint Superintendent Dr. Maria Navarro for a second four-year term. The meeting, held virtually due to inclement weather, extends Dr. Navarro’s leadership in the school system through 2029.

Board member Brenda Thomas made the motion to approve Dr. Navarro’s reappointment, which was seconded by Dottery Butler-Washington. With no discussion, the board voted unanimously in favor of the motion.

“We are very happy to retain you,” a board member said as the vote was confirmed.

Dr. Navarro expressed gratitude to both the current and previous boards, stating, “I am very happy to keep serving this community and the incredible staff, students, and families that we serve.”

Dr. Navarro’s contract, which is subject to approval by the Maryland State Superintendent, outlines her responsibilities and compensation. She will earn an annual salary of $245,000, with the potential for future increases. The contract also includes health insurance, a transportation stipend, professional development funding, and legal indemnification.

As superintendent, Dr. Navarro will oversee Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) operations, staff organization, and policy implementation. She will also serve as the board’s executive officer, secretary, and treasurer. The contract stipulates two annual performance evaluations and continued professional development opportunities.

Dr. Navarro, who has led CCPS since 2021, will continue her tenure starting July 1, 2025.
