CDR William Bruce Matthews (โ€˜Bruceโ€™), 94, passed away on February 13, 2025, in Monterey, CA. The son of William Bruce Matthews and Mary Virginia Wilson, Bruce was born and raised in La Plata, MD, graduating from La Plata High School and the U.S. Naval Academy in 1949 and 1953, respectively. Shortly after commissioning in the U.S. Navy, Bruce married Elenor Jeanne Matthews (โ€˜Jeanneโ€™) of Tacoma Park, MD, with whom he had two children, Michael Bruce and Kimberly Ann. Bruceโ€™s 25-year navy career in the submarine service took him and his family to far afield duty stations in San Diego, CA; New London, CT; Key West, FL; Washington D.C.; Charleston, SC; Norfolk, VA; Monterey, CA; Kailua, Hawaii; Ft. Washington, MD; and Bay St. Louis, MS. Bruce and Jeanne returned to Monterey for his last duty station at the Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a Masterโ€™s degree in computer science and retired in 1979. He then spent the next 10 years with the Lockheed Martin Company in Sunnyvale, CA, before retiring a second time in 1989. Bruce enjoyed his retirement years in Monterey with hunting, fishing, golf, tennis, teaching, and home improvements. He was a skilled craftsman who left behind many beautiful objects. Bruce is survived by his wife of 72 years, Jeanne, of Monterey; son Michael Matthews of Pacific Grove, CA; and daughter Kimberly Juran of Cincinnati, OH, and four grandchildren.
