
LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles County Board of County Commissioners approved a balanced fiscal year 2027 General Fund budget of $644,157,500 Tuesday, May 12, authorizing 55.5 new positions spanning nearly every corner of county government.
The adopted spending plan reflects $2,331,000 in commissioner adjustments approved during the meeting from the originally proposed budget. The Board of Education received the largest share of spending at $255,783,400, reflecting a $1,000,000 commissioner increase over the proposed amount.
A County-Wide Staffing Expansion
The 55.5 new positions touch virtually every area of county operations, from emergency response and public safety to environmental services, infrastructure and community programming.
Public safety and emergency services account for a significant share of the new hires. Emergency Services added 15 positions covering emergency medical technicians and a full complement of staff for the new Animal Care Center set to open in fiscal 2027. The Charles County Sheriff’s Office gained five new positions in areas including surveillance, accreditation, training, recruiting and systems analysis, along with two additional sworn officers through public safety grant funding. The sheriff’s office budget totals $145,231,549. The Circuit Court added a Court Social Worker.
On the administrative side, the County Administrator’s Office bolstered its building security team and added specialist and administrative support. Human Resources, Community Services and Recreation, Parks and Tourism each gained positions focused on aging services, outreach and administrative needs.
Water and sewer operations saw 11 new positions covering everything from field operations and laboratory supervision to finance, technology management and maintenance. Capital Projects Management added two program managers to oversee vertical projects and contract employees. The Landfill Fund and Environmental Services Fund each picked up one new position to support scale house management and recycling operations.
Taking effect July 1, the fiscal year 2027 budget ushers in a significant expansion of Charles County’s services and staffing.
