Charles County Sets Feb. 24 Public Hearing On Commissioner Compensation Bill

LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles County Commissioners voted Tuesday, Jan. 6, to schedule a public hearing on proposed legislation related to an increase in county commissioner compensation.

During the afternoon session, Terrah Dews, associate county attorney for Charles County, requested that commissioners set a public hearing date for proposed Bill 2026-01, which would codify compensation recommendations previously approved by the board on Dec. 9, 2025.

Commissioners voted unanimously to hold the public hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. at the Charles County Government Building, 200 Baltimore St., La Plata. The meeting will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing both in-person and virtual participation.

The underlying compensation recommendations were accepted by the commissioners at their Dec. 9 meeting, when the board approved the 2025 Compensation Commission Report. That action endorsed proposed salary and stipend adjustments for the next Board of County Commissioners term, county boards, and the Orphans’ Court.

If enacted the proposed changes would take effect Dec. 1, 2026, coinciding with the start of the next Board of County Commissioners term.

No compensation changes were adopted at the Jan. 6 meeting. The board’s action was limited to scheduling the public hearing required to move the legislation forward.
