ย Today at 10:30 a.m. Commissioner President Candice Quinn Kelly signed an order declaring a local state of emergency in Charles County.ย  The state of emergency order will be in effect for seven days. ย The current forecasted path of Hurricane Sandy appears more favorable for Charles County.ย  However, local officials made the declaration out of an abundance of caution, to ensure the Department of Emergency Services will have authority to engage, deploy and coordinate available resources to protect the lives and property of Charles County residents.

ย

Residents are encouraged to take the following precautionary actions:

ยท Be prepared for possible power outages lasting several hours or even several days. Make sure you have extra blankets and appropriate clothing to deal with cooler temperatures if you power is out.

ยท If using a generator, make sure it is not in a basement or garage and make sure it is located a safe distance from any door, windows or ventilation systems.

ยท Make sure cell phones and other electronic devices are fully charged. Consider purchasing a car charger if you don’t already have one.

ยท Secure any loose items such as yard furniture and grills outside of your house.
