LA PLATA, Md. – The Charles County Department of Emergency Services, the Maryland Environmental Service, and Michael Baker International, Inc., are updating the Charles County Hazard Mitigation Plan. The Hazard Mitigation Plan will be the blueprint for reducing property damage and saving lives from the effects of future natural and man-made disasters within the county.

Public comments are being accepted until Sunday, April 15.
This plan update is required to ensure jurisdictions within the county are eligible to receive certain types of state and federal funding, both before and after a disaster occurs. Municipal officials actively participate in providing local information to be covered by the Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The draft of the Charles County Hazard Mitigation Plan is now available online for review and comment. This website features information on hazard mitigation, the county planning process, announcements, and a calendar of events.

A copy of the draft plan is available for viewing at the Department of Emergency Services (10425 Audie Lane, La Plata), by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, learn more, or how you can get involved in the planning process, contact Michelle Lilly by phone at 301-609-3429 or email, or by mail at Charles County Department of Emergency Services, Attn: Michelle Lilly, 10425 Audie Lane, La Plata, MD 20646.
