CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — If you live in an older home within Chesapeake Beach limits, the town needs your help.

Chesapeake Beach is looking for 20 volunteer homeowners to help collect samples from interior cold-water tap locations in their homes to test for lead and copper in the town’s water supply system. The town is most interested in sampling the water in older homes, but homeowners with newer homes may also participate. This request is part of required testing for towns in Maryland.

The federal Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) became effective in Maryland in 1991, though the state began initiating bans decades earlier. The rule requires public water systems to test for lead and copper in drinking water at customers’ taps at high-risk, or Tier 1, sites in their water system. If any lead or copper is found, the town has to perform federally required repairs.

If interested in volunteering, homeowners can call or email the town at info@chesapeakebeachmd.gov or (410) 257-2230 to inform officials they are willing to collect samples. The town asks that potential volunteers provide their name, address and phone number.

If selected, a testing kit, data sheet and instructions will be delivered to your home by public works staff no later than July 13. Samples should be collected on July 15 or July 16, and town staff will pick them up July 17.

Anyone interested can learn more about volunteering online or contact Town Hall for more information. Residents can also view the 2025 Annual Drinking Water Report.
