An improperly discarded cigarette started a house fire in Port Tobacco on Friday night that left a family without a home, reports Deputy State Fire Marshal Jeff Frye.
Volunteer firefighters responded to the scene at Ann Harbor Drive from La Plata, Bryans Road, Bel Alton and Marbury. The fire was put under control in 10 minutes.
The fire started in a male child’s bedroom, Frye reports, and it caused $50,000 in damage, including $10,000 in damage to contents of the house.
The occupants were displaced from the house and are being assisted by family and friends.
