Charles County’s Board of Commissioners have formally urged the Department of Juvenile Services to “explore other sites” for a proposed detention center.  A location in Waldorf has been proposed by DJS much to the distaste of residents in the community.

A press release sent by the Charles County Government states:

Today the Charles County Commissioners unanimously approved a letter addressed to Secretary Sam Abed of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS), which strongly encourages DJS to explore other sites for the proposed detention facility for southern Maryland’s male youths located in Region V.  DJS has proposed that the facility be located in the Acton Lane Industrial Park in Waldorf.

In the letter, the Commissioners also thanked DJS for convening public meetings to get community input on the proposed placement of the facility, and acknowledged their consideration of comments and concerns raised by Charles County residents.  Maryland Delegate Peter Murphy and State Senator Thomas “Mac” Middleton will receive a copy of the letter to Secretary Abed.

Charles County Commissioner Vice President Reuben Collins (D) and Charles County Commissioner Ken Robinson (D: 1st) have both formally come out in opposition to the proposal.  Commissioner Debra Davis (D: 2nd) has also praised the residents for their involvement and has said she feels they would win out.  Before today, Commissioner President Candice Quinn Kelly and Commissioner Bobby Rucci (D: 4th) have remained neutral in the matter.
