Leonardtown, MD – It was on August 26, 1920, women in the United States were granted the right to vote through the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment.
Since then, the U.S. has designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day in commemoration of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. The day also serves as a symbol of the continued struggle for equal rights for all. In tribute and recognition of the 98th anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County declared Women’s Equality Day in the county during their weekly business meeting.
“Women in St. Mary’s County are to be commended for their efforts to promote local organizations and activities in the political arena. They are encouraged to continue to exercise their hard-won right to participate fully in the political process,” said Commissioner Todd Morgan (4th District).
In proclaiming Women’s equality Day, the commissioners call upon everyone in the county to acknowledge this milestone and to continue to strive for global equal rights.
