CALIFORNIA, Md. — A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Southern Maryland and surrounding areas until 9 p.m. Monday as conditions remain favorable for strong to severe storms across the region.
The National Weather Service issued the watch at 2:08 p.m. on June 22, 2026, for Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.
A severe thunderstorm watch means severe storms are possible in and near the watch area. Residents should monitor weather updates through the afternoon and evening and be prepared to move indoors if warnings are issued.
The watch also includes the District of Columbia and several other Maryland jurisdictions, including Anne Arundel, Prince George’s, Montgomery, Howard, Frederick, Carroll, Washington, Allegany, Cecil, Baltimore, Baltimore City and Harford counties.
The broader watch area extends into Northern Virginia, Central Virginia, Northwest Virginia, Western Virginia and parts of eastern and panhandle West Virginia.
Forecasters warned that storms developing in the region could become strong during the afternoon and evening hours. Damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, heavy rain and hail are possible with stronger storms.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, avoid travel during severe storms when possible and move indoors immediately if thunder is heard. Anyone on the water, at parks or attending outdoor activities should have a way to receive weather alerts.
The watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. unless canceled or extended by the National Weather Service.
