Leonardtown, MD – To recognize the historic and cultural contributions of Hispanic Americans, the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County held a ceremony marking September 15 – October 15 Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s theme celebrates “Hispanic Americans: Energizing our Nation’s Diversity.”

The observation of Hispanic Heritage was first held in the United States in 1968 as “Hispanic Heritage Week” under President Lyndon Johnson. The week was expanded to a full month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, beginning September 15 and ending on October 15. Today it’s known as Hispanic Heritage Month.

“The United States of America was built by the ingenuity, integrity and diverse contributions of its people,” said Commissioner President Randy Guy. “The Hispanic community continues to share a positive influence on our country by providing the foundational qualities of faith, hard work, service, and a strong commitment to family.”

Hispanics have helped shape the communities in which they live, enhanced the quality of life through many contributions, including those as business owners, engineers, doctors, lawyers, laborers, teachers, public servants, and brave service members who defend the country and way of life with integrity, pride and honor.

The Commissioners of St. Mary’s County urged citizens to take time and recognize the contributions Hispanics have made and continue to make in American society.
