On Friday, Dec. 4, Maryland State Comptroller, Peter Franchot joined Leonardtown Mayor, Chip Norris, Del. John F. Wood, Jr., Commissioners, Jack Russell and Thomas Mattingly along with other prominent members of the Leonardtown community to encourage residents of St. Maryโ€™s County to shop locally this holiday season.

Franchot began his day at the Brewing Grounds on Fenwick St. and visited with many local businesses, chatting with patrons throughout the historic county seat. During his tour of the town, Franchot reminded merchants and shoppers alike that putting money back into the community by supporting area businesses is a great way to invigorate the local economy.

“In Maryland, we are fortunate to have an abundance of wonderful small businesses, many of which are located in revitalized and newly-vibrant downtown business districts,” said Franchot. He went on to state that businesses are the engines that power Smart Growth, and that business owners are the backbone of strong local communities.

“As Comptroller, Iโ€™ve had the great privilege of visiting locally-owned shops, galleries and restaurants around the State.
And I continue to be so impressed with the little things that make the Main Street shopping experience so distinctive and special. Youโ€™ll find salespeople who are friendly and knowledgeable, and wonderful merchandise that you just wonโ€™t find in a national franchise,” he said.

The Comptroller indicated that is a primary reason he is going around the state, visiting towns like Leonardtown, and urging all Marylanders to patronize their locally-owned and operated stores whenever possible.

“Itโ€™s good for Marylandโ€™s economy, good for our communities, and โ€“ trust me โ€“ it will be good for those on your shopping list.โ€

According to Commissioner Thomas Mattingly, โ€œMr. Franchot was here and reinforced the fact that local governments need to continue to work hard to support local businesses.โ€ He went on to say that the Comptroller commended the County for its efforts to support local businesses. Mattingly also said that the Comptroller stated that local governmentโ€™s role would need to continue to be supportive given the State of Marylandโ€™s current financial position.

So far, the Comptrollerโ€™s โ€œShop Localโ€ tour has made stops in Cambridge in Dorchester County, Easton in Talbot County, Ellicott City in Howard County, Frederick in Frederick County and Hampden in Baltimore City. He has plans for additional stops in the coming weeks in Annapolis in Anne Arundel County, Bowie in Prince Georgeโ€™s County, Gaithersburg in Montgomery County and La Plata in Charles County.
