With temperatures expected to soar to the upper 90s today and the heat index reaching even higher, residents are reminded there are several places in Calvert County to visit if they need to cool off. The county’s community centers and the Prince Frederick Library will be open during regular hours and safe drinking water is available in each of them. Residents who need to take refuge in a safe, cool place may go to one of the following locations:

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Monday, July 20 from noon to 8 p.m. Heat index values are forecast to reach 109 degrees. A heat advisory means that a period of high temperatures is expected. The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will create a situation where heat illnesses are possible. To avoid heat-related illness, take additional precautions if you work or spend time outside. Wear light weight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

Fees for indoor and outdoor pools are $5 for ages 13 and older; $4 for youth ages 2-12 and seniors; free for children under age 2. The price of daily admission to the indoor and outdoor swimming pools will be reduced to $2 per person from 3 p.m. to close.
With the hot weather forecast for Charles County in the coming days, the County Commissioners are advising residents to be cautious and aware during this period of extreme weather.
When the weather is extremely hot:
- Stay indoors as much as possible, and limit exposure to the sun.
- Stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine, if air conditioning is not available.
- Eat well-balanced, light, and regular meals. Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.
- Drink plenty of water. Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease; are on fluid-restricted diets; or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake.
- Limit intake of alcoholic beverages.
- Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible.
- Protect face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
- Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.
- Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
- Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day. Use a buddy system when working in extreme heat, and take frequent breaks.
St. Mary’s County
Leonardtown, MD – The weather forecast for St. Mary’s County and Southern Maryland calls for extremely hot and humid conditions today and tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 90’s with heat values around 105 degrees.
For those without air-conditioning, or those outdoors for an extended period of time, impacts from the heat can lead to a risk of heat-related illness.
St. Mary’s County reminds citizens to:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine
- Reduce outdoor activities
- Wear light-weight, light-colored clothing
- Stay indoors between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Seek relief from the heat in an air conditioned location
- Check on older, sick or frail people in your community who may need help responding to the heat
