The St. Maryโ€™s Board of County Commissioners joins county employees in remembering Kenneth R. โ€œKennyโ€ Dement. The former two term commissioner passed away early this morning.

Prior to serving on the Board of County Commissioners Mr. Dement worked for the St. Maryโ€™s County Public School system as a school bus driver and bus driver trainer for 20 years. He retired from the school system in in 1997.ย 

Mr. Dement had been involved in various local civic activities over the years. A lifelong sportsman, he received numerous awards for his contributions to St. Maryโ€™s County softball leagues. A founder of the SMC Slow Pitch Softball League, Mr. Dement served as League President for over 30 years. In addition, he is one of the founders and former President of the SMC Softball Hall of Fame.ย 

Mr. Dement was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2065 and was previously a board member of the St. Maryโ€™s County Recreation and Parks Board.

โ€œI am saddened to hear of Kenโ€™s passing,โ€ said Commissioner President Jack Russell. โ€œHe was a loyal servant to the people of St. Maryโ€™s County. I enjoyed working with him and his presence will truly be missed.โ€ย 

Dementโ€™s final term as Commissioner expired in November 2010.

Commissioner President Jack Russell has ordered all county flags lowered for a period of five business days effective immediately in remembrance of former Commissioner Dement. This order expires at sunset on Tuesday, November 19.
