More than 75 students competed in the Charles County Public Schools annual Winter Chess Tournament held Feb. 20 at Westlake High School. The tournament, sponsored by the school system’s gifted education and instruction departments, is open to any county resident in grades kindergarten through 12.
The tournament follows a Swiss-style format in which each student plays four games. Students competed in five grade-level divisions and trophies were awarded to first- and second-place winners. Other students received medals for placing in their division.
The following students were winners in their division:
Grades kindergarten through second:
· Ali Ramamni, first place, Arthur Middleton Elementary School, second grade;
· Christopher Rand-Crawford, second place, Mary B. Neal Elementary School, second grade; and
· Christopher Morse, third place, William A. Diggs Elementary School, second grade.
Grades three and four:
· James Tabourne, first place, Eva Turner Elementary School, third grade;
· Luke Vandegrift, second place, Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School, fourth grade;
· Thomas Puhalsky, third place, Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School, fourth grade;
· Kle Wood, tie for fourth place, Middleton, fourth grade;
· Sterling Moorehead, tie for fourth place, Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy, third grade;
· Anthony Marshall, tie for fourth place, Gale-Bailey Elementary School, fourth grade;
· Adolf Accad, fifth place, William B. Wade Elementary School, third grade;
· Justin Stinnett, sixth place, Gale-Bailey, fourth grade; and
· Kyle Batchelor, seventh place, Gale-Bailey, fourth grade.
Grades five and six:
· Emma Dawson, first place, Piccowaxen Middle School, sixth grade;
