ย Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash that left one dead and four injured.

Police and rescue crews responded to report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries along Route 5 and Gallant Green Road in Hughesville on Dec. 29 around 4:21 p.m.

Crews arrived on the scene to discover two vehicles, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier and a 2001 Aurora Oldsmobile involved with several patients injured.ย 

The driver of the Cavalier wasย Mary Gertrude Wade Chandler, 80 of Waldorf. Inside the Oldsmobile, there was a driver, Jennifer Rae Synder, 37 of Mechanicsville, along with a 10-year-old, a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old as passengers.

Investigation revealed Ms. Chandler in the Chevrolet was making a left turn onto Gallant Green Road from southbound MD Route 5.

Ms. Synder was driving the Oldsmobile and was traveling northbound Maryland Route 5. ย The driver of Chevrolet failed to yield the right of way and was struck by Oldsmobile. Chandler was transported to Prince Georgeโ€™s Hospital Center by MSP Helicopter Trooper 7 to Prince Georges Shock Trauma and was pronounced deceased at 9:28 p.m. ย 

Ms. Synder and all of her passengers were transported by ambulance to Civista Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

State Police have determined the cause of the crash was failure to yield the right of way by Ms. Chandler. Investigation continues.
