NEWBURG, Md. – Crews from the Charles County Volunteer Fire Department prevented a small underground fire from spreading in a power plant during the early hours of Wednesday, April 18. Reports say around 2:30 a.m., an employee at the GENON Coal Power Plant noticed a fire in an underground coal train car.

Crews arrived on scene and worked to find an access point to safely extinguish the flames. After several hours, crews had the scene under control around 5:30 a.m. No injuries were reported from the fire.
