LEONARDTOWN, Md. – Have you ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes at your Sheriff’s Office? The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for its 2026 Citizens Police Academy, an immersive eight-week program that gives residents an inside look at modern law enforcement through hands-on experiences, interactive demonstrations, and direct engagement with the deputies and civilian professionals who serve the community every day.
Beginning Thursday, September 3, 2026, the free program meets Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. through October 22. Rather than sitting through a series of lectures, participants will experience many aspects of the Sheriff’s Office firsthand, exploring the people, equipment, and specialized units that work together to keep St. Mary’s County safe.
Throughout the academy, participants will:
- Experience hands-on activities and realistic demonstrations—not just presentations
- Meet the deputies, correctional officers, detectives, and civilian professionals who make up the Sheriff’s Office
- Explore Patrol, Criminal Investigations, K-9, the Crime Lab, Special Operations, the Detention and Rehabilitation Center, and other specialized units
- Visit the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy and other Sheriff’s Office facilities
- Learn how deputies respond to emergencies, investigate crimes, and serve the community every day
- Participate in a closing session highlighting the human side of law enforcement and receive a certificate of completion
The Citizens Police Academy is not a recruiting program. It is open to St. Mary’s County residents who are at least 18 years old and are interested in learning more about the Sheriff’s Office. No law enforcement experience is required, only curiosity and a willingness to engage. Class size is intentionally limited to 16 participants to encourage meaningful conversations and provide greater access to instructors and demonstrations.
Most classes will be held at the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, 23150 Leonard Hall Drive in Leonardtown, with several sessions taking place at off-site locations to provide participants with an even broader perspective of local public safety operations.
Applications are now being accepted online. Space is limited, and interested residents are encouraged to apply early. All applications will be reviewed, and applicants will be notified once selections have been made.
