The College of Southern Maryland presents the Southern Maryland Concert
Band (SMCB) performing works with a theme of โFlourishโ at 8 p.m. on
Oct. 25, at the Fine Arts (FA) Center, La Plata Campus, 8730 Mitchell
Road, La Plata.
The SMCB, under the direction of Michael Peerless, will continue its collaboration with CSMโs music program, through which students will be able to join community members and professional musicians in the SMCB for ensemble credit.
โThe SMCB is now in its second full year of collaboration with
CSM,โ said Communication, Arts and Humanities Chair Dr. Stephen
Johnson. โWe’re pleased that the SMCB can offer quality performance
opportunities to our students while providing the community members in
the band a fun venue in which to perform.โ
The SMCB will be performing a number of works including those for wind
bands entitled “Flourish” as well as transcriptions of opera overtures
and concert band standards such as John Philip Sousa’s “Semper Fidelis”
march and “God Bless America.” CSM faculty member Takako Mato will be a
featured clarinet soloist for the performance.
The SMCB was formed in 1984 by Charles Armstrong as an all-volunteer,
non-profit community-based ensemble of adult and student
instrumentalists dedicated to performing quality concert band music for
audiences in and around Southern Maryland. Armstrong, former supervisor
of music and longtime band director in the Charles County Public Schools
wanted to recreate the American tradition of community bands in Southern
Maryland. Through this vision, the original group, the Community Concert
Band Inc. was founded. Today, the SMCB is the only community-based
instrumental ensemble dedicated to providing quality, yet affordable
music to families in Southern Maryland.
Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 on the day of the performance. For
