The College of Southern Maryland will dedicate its newly renovated science and technology building on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m.ย  At 3:30 p.m., the school will conduct the naming of the building as the Francis P. Chiaramonte M.D. Center for Science and Technology

Dr. Chiaramonte was the founder of the Southern Maryland Hospital Center and has contributed $1 million to the CSM Foundation. His gift is the largest private cash donation to the college in its 50-year history.

The science and technology building in La Plata was constructed 40 years ago at a cost of $1.2 million. As student enrollment continued to grow and the market demand for scientists, technicians, engineers and mathematicians increased, so did the need for a larger facility.

Theย  newly renovated 60,000 square foot building houses the college’s Department of Academic Affairs as well as theย departments of mathematics, physics and engineering, the biological and physical sciences and information technology.

The building includes a second level with a greenhouse in addition to state-of-the-art chemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physiology labs. The renovation project cost approximately $11.7 million.
