Citizens Encouraged to Get Involved in Local Government

The Charles County Commissioners are seeking county residents to fill vacancies on the following boards, committees, and commissions:

  • Adult Public Guardianship Review Board

  • Agricultural Land Preservation Advisory Board

  • Area Council on Aging

  • Commission for Women

  • Disadvantaged Business Loan Review Committee

  • Heritage Commission

  • Historic Preservation Commission

  • Housing Authority Board of Charles County

  • Library Board of Trustees

  • Monument Commission

  • Planning Commission

  • Wicomico Scenic River Commission

There are 3 vacancies on the 7-member Planning Commission for a 4-year term beginning 12/31/2012. The members are “citizen planners” as they are chosen from all walks of life. As such, formal planning experience or training is not required. The Planning Commission is involved in the drafting and implementation of the Comprehensive Plan, makes recommendations on re-zoning requests and is the approval authority for subdivision of property in the County. The Board members receive a stipend. Meetings are held twice monthly on Monday evenings at 6:30 pm.ย 

There is 1 vacancy on the seven-member Housing Authority Board of Charles County. The Board supports activities which promote the availability of safe, sanitary, and decent housing for persons of low and moderate income in Charles County. The Board meets at 4:30 pm on the fourth Thursday of each month. Members serve 5-year terms.

There is 1 vacancy on the Historic Preservation Commission. The Commission will recommend properties for local historic landmark designation, review exterior changes to locally designated landmarks, and support documentation of historic resources throughout Charles County. Applicant must possess interest or training in history, architectural history, archeology, historic preservation, landscape design, or related field. The Board meets quarterly.
