On June 3 at 2:33 a.m., Detective D. Gross of the Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Officeโ€™s auto theft detail located a stolen vehicle unoccupied in a parking lot on Smallwood Drive West in Waldorf.

Other officers, including a K9 team, established surveillance of the vehicle and waited for someone to occupy it. When Allen Tyrone Butler, 26, of Washington, D.C., entered the vehicle, officers subsequently arrested and charged him with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and theft valued at more than $500.

He was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before a district court commissioner.

The detective found the vehicle while using a device that reads tag numbers and identifies stolen tags and vehicles. The vehicle had been reported stolen in Prince Georgeโ€™s County on May 29.

Gross and Officer J. Walter investigated.
