Deputies, State Troopers Working Together To Enforce Traffic (Rt. 235) Three Notch Road

LEONARDTOWN, Md. – The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit in cooperation with the Maryland State Police continue to patrol for speeding, reckless driving and distracted driving along the Route 235.

Deputies with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit made 22 vehicle stops during commuting hours for Naval Air Station Patuxent River, resulting in 13 traffic citations, 13 warnings and one repair order.

In addition, last week Maryland State Police made 28 traffic stops, resulting in eight traffic citations, 26 warnings and one equipment repair order. Of those 28 stops, 15 of them were directly related to distracted driving offenses, including drivers illegally using their cellphones.

On Wednesday, June 7, 2023, St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Office deputies and Maryland State Troopers combined resources and conducted joint traffic enforcement on Route 235. That day, 10 vehicles were stopped, resulting in five traffic citations, nine warnings and three equipment repair orders.

More joint traffic enforcement initiatives are planned this month in June between the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack.

Use only hands-free devices when talking on cellphones, obey the posted speed limits and give yourself enough space between vehicles to provide adequate reaction time to avoid a collision.

  1. good job officers! I hope these people learn! killers on the road using their cellphones. gets me really angry.

  2. Being a responsible operator of a motor vehicle means nothing to some people.
These people whom behave without regard for others cause Karma to become the driving force in their lives . Karma always finds a way to pay back ten fold .

  3. How about 234? It’s equally as bad as 235, maybe worse since it’s single lane each direction. It’s like the damn wild wild west driving that road.

    1. Least you don’t have traffic lights on that road. And c’mon, 301 is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much worse especially in Charles County. Maybe 234 is worse closer to the race track (since I RARELY go any further on 234 than the Chaptico circle)

235 is basically the “I-95” of St. Mary’s County.

    2. Yep, someone is always driving 15mph under the speed limit with a stack of impatient people behind them taking risks to get around.

  4. Should be ZERO tolerance (NO WARNINGS) for distracted driving. There is NOTHING on that ‘device’ that cannot wait until one gets to their destination. If they think it’s that important, they can pull off the road and into a PARKING lot to address it.

  5. I applaud both departments for helping bring our roads to a safer traffic level! Thank you SMCo Sherriff’s Department and MD State Troopers! Stay safe out there!

  6. So why don’t they do this during the AM/PM rush instead of the middle of the day? There’s always idiot drivers on all these roads but some of the most aggressive ones are during rush hour.

  7. Getting these scamming panhandlers off our streets and intersections would be nice, but the county doesn’t consider it “illegal” for some reason.
