A 55-year-old double amputee was killed in a house fire this morning on Butler Road in Newburg.

The Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office reports the fire started downstairs in the house, where the victimโ€™s bedroom was. A fire alarm woke up the manโ€™s wife sleeping upstairs, Deputy State Fire Marshal Joseph Zurolo told the Baltimore Sun.

The woman received serious burns when she unsuccessfully attempted to rescue her husband. The coupleโ€™s daughter and two grandchildren were forced to jump from a second story window, and received injuries, the Sun reports.
