On July 23, 2013, Deputies were dispatched to Wal-mart in California, Maryland to check on the welfare of a subject.
Deputy David Potter responded to the call in his marked patrol vehicle, while off duty. Deputy Potter made contact with a Wal-mart employee who identified Crystal Jean Lester, 38 of California, Maryland, sitting on the curb. The employee advised Deputy Potter that Lester appeared intoxicated and drove her vehicle through the parking lot until it ran out of gas.
Deputy Potter made contact with Lester, identifying himself as Law Enforcement. Deputy Potter observed indicators of intoxication. While talking with Lester, she became belligerent and would not provide her name. Lester escalated, continuing to yell obscenities after Deputy Potter ordered her to cease. Lester’s actions were drawing the attention of patrons exiting the business.
Deputy Potter attempted to place Lester under arrest when she attempted to assault Deputy Potter. After a brief struggle Deputy Potter secured Lester who continued to actively resist.
Lester was arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Assault/Disorderly Conduct/Resisting/False Name to Law Enforcement.
