CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — Motorists traveling through portions of Southern Maryland are being advised to plan ahead as Hawthorne Road (MD 225) is closed near the bridge, resulting in a detour that is expected to impact travel for several months.

Drivers coming from La Plata, White Plains, Nanjemoy, Marbury and Port Tobacco should expect changes to their normal routes and allow extra travel time when traveling through the area.

According to community notices, traffic on MD 225 will be rerouted to Bryans Road. Drivers should take a right at the Marshall Corner traffic light, make the first left onto Bumpy Oak Road, then turn right at the airport traffic signal onto Bryans Road before reconnecting with MD 210.

While the closure is expected to create delays and traffic congestion, local leaders and residents are encouraging the community to continue supporting small businesses in Indian Head during the construction period. Many restaurants, shops and service providers remain open and rely on local customers and visitors throughout the project.

The detour may change travel patterns, but business owners hope residents will continue to make the trip to support the town’s local economy while improvements are underway.

Community members are also sharing updates and reminders to help neighbors navigate the detour safely and efficiently. Drivers are encouraged to adjust their schedules, allow extra travel time and follow posted detour signs.

Officials urge motorists to remain patient as construction progresses, noting that the temporary inconvenience is part of a long-term effort to improve transportation infrastructure in the area. In the meantime, residents can make a positive impact by continuing to shop, dine and do business in Indian Head.
