โ€œThoughts, like fleas, jump from man to man, but they don’t bite everybody.โ€ โ€“ Stanislaw J. Lec

When I moved to SoMD I was shocked at how many people have Lyme disease. Growing up in NY we had a few deer ticks that would show up on our dogs and cats but rarely on us. It is also colder up north and that may help reduce their numbers.

For awhile I lived in Great Mills and they would crawl on us from the lawn. I didnโ€™t even have to go into the woods. Maybe someone can come up with a spray to wipe their numbers down.

We spray swamps in NY to kill mosquitoes and it helps decrease the chances of them transmitting West Nile Virus or something else to humans. I think someone was asleep at the wheel when they created mosquitoes and ticks. Really, who needs them?

Deer ticks that are able to transmit Lyme disease carry a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. These little monsters sit perched on the edge of a plant with their front legs extended so they can latch on to anything that has blood that walks by. Then they look for a nice place to set up camp.

For every case reported about 7 to 12 are not according to the CDC, and overall the reported cases are definitely rising. Part of that is because we are more aware of it now.

There is also a Lone Star tick, which has a white spot resembling a star (itโ€™s not a Cowboys fan). These guys rarely transmit Lyme disease but can carry a bunch of other ones. Memo to self, all ticks are bad.

Prevention Ideas:

  • Dress in light clothing so you can spot the ticks.
