Dr. Michael J. Martirano, superintendent of schools, and a resident of Leonardtown, has been selected for the Leadership Maryland Class of 2007.ย Leadership Maryland is an independent, educational, non-profit organization designed to inform top-level executives from the public and private sectors about the critical issues, challenges, and opportunities facing the State of Maryland and its regions.
Since his appointment as superintendent in 2005, Dr. Martirano has reorganized the school system with an emphasis on service to schools.ย He takes every opportunity to engage in school-based discussions on what works best for students, and is guided by one focus — creating a total community committed to learning and safety for all children in St. Maryโs County.ย Dr. Martirano has established a vision plan entitled โCharting a Course to Excellenceโ that highlights 15 priorities to improve student achievement.ย His motto, โWork Hard and Be Nice,โ has proliferated throughout St. Maryโs County.
Dr. Martirano, who is certified as a secondary principal, supervisor, and superintendent in Maryland, was born in Frostburg, MD.ย He holds a Doctorate of Education degree in school management and instructional leadership from Nova Southeastern University, and two Master of Education degrees and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland.ย He has published several articles in national education journals and is a noted presenter on various education topics.ย Additionally, Dr. Martirano has served on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University as an education department instructor and is a member of Phi Delta Kappa Educational Society and the University of Maryland Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society.ย Most recently, he was selected as the Educational Administrator of the Year by the Maryland Association of Educational Office Professionals (MAEOP).
Leadership Maryland participants are recognized and accomplished senior-level leaders representing business, non-profits, government, unions, the education community, and community volunteers from around the state who will commit to contributing their time and talents effectively in meeting the rapidly changing needs and challenges facing Maryland. The goal is to cultivate their interest, statewide knowledge, and to develop and enhance leadership capacities while fostering a higher level of civic and community concern and participation.
