The crash occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 12, 2025, after a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to stop a Nissan sedan for a traffic violation along Route 4 in Prince Frederick. According to investigators, the driver failed to stop and fled from the deputy, who had activated emergency lights and sirens.

Authorities said Samuel continued southbound before entering the intersection of Route 4 and Stoakley Road at a high rate of speed and running a red light. The Nissan collided with a Honda sedan driven by Servon Gatewood, 58, of Lusby, and also struck a Kia SUV.

Gatewood was transported to CalvertHealth Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the collision. The occupants of the Kia suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators alleged Samuel was traveling more than 83 mph in a posted 35 mph zone before the crash. Court records also indicated the Nissan was displaying an improper registration plate and had an expired registration at the time of the pursuit.

Following the collision, Samuel was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into custody. He was later charged with felony negligent manslaughter by automobile and other related offenses.

According to the Calvert County State’s Attorney’s Office, Samuel admitted he failed to stop for a routine traffic stop and fled from police before running the red light and striking Gatewood’s vehicle.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy State’s Attorney Christopher J. Monte.

The crash was investigated by the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division with assistance from the Maryland State Police Crash Team because it occurred during a police pursuit.
