The Maryland GOP Fall Convention was held November 30 and December 1 at the Turf Valley Conference Center in Ellicott City. One of the workshop presenters was Alex Nowrasteh, (aย registeredย Republicanย and ideologicalย libertarian) Policy Analyst with theย Cato Institute. Nowrastehโsย expertise was evident throughout the workshop. He was personable and engaged his rapt listeners in a spirited question-and-and-answer session. With his gracious permission, I have summarized his talk on โHow to Fix the Immigration Systemโ belowโฆ
Nowrasteh believes that the U.S. has a serious problem with unauthorized immigration and that the only way to fix this unauthorized immigration problem is to fix the legal immigration system. The U.S. is fighting a losing battle in attempting to enforce bad laws. And – in a direct quote – he believes that โโฆthese laws suckโ!
People move to the U.S. in pursuit of a higher income, so the income in the U.S. has to be high enough to compensate for migration. Immigrants become more productive just by coming here.ย Immigration slows or stops during recessions in the U.S.; America is wealthier because Americans are more productive, so there is a huge economic attraction to come to the U.S.
