A New York arts critic back in the โ€˜80โ€™s once likened Sarah Brightmanโ€™s performance as Christine in her composer husband Andrew Lloyd Webberโ€™s smash Broadway hit,ย The Phantom of the Operaย to โ€œMinnie Mouse on Quaaludes.โ€ In a similar vein, New Yorkย Magazineโ€™sย John Heilemann has equated Bidenโ€™s performance in last weekโ€™s only vice-presidential debate with Paul Ryan to that of โ€œBentsen on crystal meth.โ€

In an article in October 15thโ€™s edition ofย The Washington Times, Brett M. Decker had this to say: โ€œโ€ฆMr. Bidenโ€™s obnoxious, smirking, rude behavior on the debate stage was the most disrespectful performance of any presidential or vice-presidential candidate in the history of televised election debates, which goes back to the 1960 contest between then-Vice President Richard M. Nixon and Sen. John F. Kennedy.โ€ Those are pretty strong words.ย  Mr. Decker goes on to say in that same article โ€œโ€ฆThe incessant smugness, jesting and sneeringโ€ฆmight have looked like Mr. Biden was an unhinged lunaticโ€ฆโ€

And yet, the media is reporting that Bidenโ€™s base is excited by his histrionics. Try this: imagine watching the debate between Biden and Ryan with the volume turned all the way down. Whose โ€œfaceโ€ would best represent the USA to the rest of the worldย โ€“ manic Bidenโ€™s? (note my deliberate spellingโ€ฆm a nย iย c, not m a n iย aย c) or calm, composed Ryanโ€™s?
