A New York arts critic back in the ‘80’s once likened Sarah Brightman’s performance as Christine in her composer husband Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash Broadway hit, The Phantom of the Opera to “Minnie Mouse on Quaaludes.” In a similar vein, New York Magazine’s John Heilemann has equated Biden’s performance in last week’s only vice-presidential debate with Paul Ryan to that of “Bentsen on crystal meth.”
In an article in October 15th’s edition of The Washington Times, Brett M. Decker had this to say: “…Mr. Biden’s obnoxious, smirking, rude behavior on the debate stage was the most disrespectful performance of any presidential or vice-presidential candidate in the history of televised election debates, which goes back to the 1960 contest between then-Vice President Richard M. Nixon and Sen. John F. Kennedy.” Those are pretty strong words. Mr. Decker goes on to say in that same article “…The incessant smugness, jesting and sneering…might have looked like Mr. Biden was an unhinged lunatic…”
And yet, the media is reporting that Biden’s base is excited by his histrionics. Try this: imagine watching the debate between Biden and Ryan with the volume turned all the way down. Whose “face” would best represent the USA to the rest of the world – manic Biden’s? (note my deliberate spelling…m a n i c, not m a n i a c) or calm, composed Ryan’s?
