March 25 marks the 381st anniversary of the Founding of Maryland dating to 1634 with the landing of the ships Ark and Dove on St. Clement’s Island. There was a ceremony featuring St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron at the St. Clement’s Island Museum in Colton’s Point at 2 p.m. to commemorate this event.
Ode to Hillary
Former First Lady and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was quoted in The Reliable Source column written by Helena Andrews and Emily Heil of The Washington Post newspaper March 13, as having said “The White House is like a box of chocolates. It’s pretty on the outside but inside, it’s full of nuts”. One presumes that she was including herself in that description. The quote originated as part of a video played at the 1995 Gridiron Dinner held in Washington, DC. And now, with apologies to the well-known nursery rhyme, is an Ode to Hillary…

Republican Women of St. Mary’s Club
The RWSM Club met Monday, March 23 at The Front Porch Restaurant in Leonardtown for the first time in 2015, with Maryland’s First Daughter, Jaymi Sterling, president. Guest speaker was St. Mary’s County Commissioner President Randy Guy.
Commissioner Guy modestly stated that he’s been in office for only four months, but feels the commissioners have already accomplished things that some thought would take four years! He believes that the Base at PAX River is not going anywhere. He said that the senior population is projected to increase by 250 percent in the coming years and he came to the RWSM Club meeting directly from having worked out at the Garvey Senior Center. He continued that this is only the second time in the history of St. Mary’s County that the county has had an all-GOP across-the-board commission. He said that he is humbled to have been elected and feels that he works with a good team. He added that the commissioners have managed to balance the budget without raising taxes (income or real estate) but noted that the price of everything has gone up (trash collection fees, for example). Sixty-two percent of the county’s budget goes to fund education. He is not a “social media” guy (no pun intended). He does not do Twitter or Facebook. At the conclusion of his talk, he graciously responded to questions from the audience on topics such as the new library and red-light cameras.
Carolyn Rice of Calvert County and also with the National Federation of Republican Women spoke briefly about the importance of RWSM Club members to keep track of their volunteer hours. She told the group that the NFRW is the largest women’s organization in the country. She also mentioned that former St. Mary’s County Commissioner Cindy Jones is now the Vice-President of the Southern Region of the NFRW.
St. Mary’s County Republican Central Committee member (and former SMCRCC Chair) Mary Burke-Russell (now also First vice-chair with the MD GOP) proudly gave an update on St. Mary’s County’s voter registration count: Republicans outnumber Democrats by over 1,000 – and she wants to see this increase.
The next RWSM Club meeting will be held on Monday, April 27 with Guest Speaker SMC Sheriff Tim Cameron.

Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance will sponsor a HomeSpun CoffeeHouse with the GrooveSpan Trio on Friday, March 27 at Christ Church Parish Hall located at 37497 Zach Fowler Road in Chaptico. Little Explorers Day will be celebrated at Historic St. Mary’s City on Wednesday, April 1. The program focuses on young visitors as they discover the world through storytelling, crafts, songs, and outdoor exploration. This event is for preschoolers ages 3 to 5 and an accompanying parent for an hour of adventure, fun and learning. This event is held 2 times per month on Wednesdays in the spring and fall. The theme on April 1 is “Spring Chickens” at the Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation from 10 to 11 a.m. The fee is $4 per child for non-members; $3 for Friends members (free for accompanying adults).
