Esperanza Middle Schoolย was evacuated earlier this morning, but at 10:30 a.m. The Bay Net was notified that theย children areย now back inside the school’s gym in a safe environment.

An electrical smell was detected and the school had been experiencing power outages during the morning, Zina Thomas of St. Mary’s County School Board told The Bay Net.

The students and staff are safe.

Students have been sent home from school.

The public schools released the following press release:

URGENT NOTICE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF ESPERANZA MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS —

Due to a continued power outage, Esperanza Middle School will dismiss students 11:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, April 17, 2007. Buses will begin their return routes at that time, but may be delayed due to their regularly scheduled mid-day routes.ย 

If no further announcements are made, the school will resume its normal schedule tomorrow.
