Leonardtown, MD — Identity thieves are always looking for every opportunity to steal your good name and credit and seniors are often their favorite targets.
That’s why the St. Mary’s Department of Aging & Human Services is teaming up with the Department of Public Works & Transportation and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office to host an Identity Protection Day.
The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Garvey Senior Activity Center, located at 41780 Baldridge Street in Leonardtown, MD.
Seniors will learn about the latest scams and frauds and the best ways to protect yourself against them in workshops Jeannine Robinson-Hurley from the Office of the Attorney General at 9:30 a.m. and Cpl. Kristi Nelson with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office at 11:30 a.m.
Since bills and bank statements are favorite targets of ID thieves, two shred trucks will be available to safely dispose of confidential documents.
People are asked to only bring confidential materials and not items like newspapers and magazines.. While the shredder can handle simple staples, paper clips, spiral note books, and thin metal prongs, larger items like three-ring binders will not be accepted.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Mary’s County Health Department will also be on-site to collect unwanted and outdated medications while the Health Department will be collect sharps, such as diabetic needle supplies and lancets.
This event is free and open to the community.
