WALDORF, Md. — Fire and emergency crews responded to a large natural gas leak in Waldorf late Friday morning after an excavator struck a 3-inch gas line, prompting the evacuation of a nearby building.
The incident was reported around 10:55 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, in the area of Irongate Drive and Industrial Park Drive.
Initial reports indicated a broken gas line, and crews quickly upgraded the response to a large outside gas leak assignment.
Emergency personnel determined that an excavator had struck an approximately 3-inch gas line.
A nearby building was evacuated as a precaution while firefighters established a command post and staged additional units in the area.
Hazmat personnel were also requested to the scene.
Washington Gas was notified and responded to assist with the leak.
Fire crews remained staged nearby while awaiting recommendations from the gas company.
No injuries were reported in the initial incident information.
