The Calvert County Cliff Stabilization Advisory Committee (CSAC) met Tuesday, Aug. 21 at Courthouse Square in Prince Frederick. The monthly meeting was highlighted by a presentation on cliff erosion, recession and stabilization by Dr. Tuncer B. Edil of the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering.

Edil is an expert on geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering. He noted that erosion of cliffs, bluffs, slopes and shoreline is a concern all along Lake Superior. Scientists agree โ€œeroding material impactโ€ poses not just a problem for property owners living close to the water but also imperils fish and other wildlife.

In addition to wave action, such factors as wind, surface water runoff and frigid weather conditions can also compromise the stability of the cliffs. During his presentation Edil showed the audience pictures and diagrams of several stabilization projects done throughout the great lakeโ€™s shoreline.

The CSAC was formed by the Calvert County Commissioners in January 2011 to address soil erosion control and shoreline concerns. The panel is comprised of waterfront property owners from a dozen communities. The committee meets the third Tuesday of each month starting at 6 p.m.

At CSACโ€™s September meeting the guest speaker will be an expert on the Puritan Tiger Beetle.
