
LA PLATA, Md. — Charles County Recreation, Parks, and Tourism is bringing an exciting and educational opportunity to local youth with HBCUFest College Explosion, a free event connecting students with representatives from multiple Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
The event will take place on Feb. 15, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Westlake High School. Open to students ages 12-18, the day will include student panels, door prizes, and information sessions with HBCU representatives.
“Bring smiles, excitement, and an attitude to learn,” said Ju’Wann Jones, chief of recreation. “There will not be on-site admissions, but it’s OK to bring their resume or unofficial transcript.”

When asked if younger siblings could attend, Jones said, “Although this is a teen event, it’s never too early to expose youth to what colleges have to offer. They are welcome to attend; however, our sessions are geared toward high schoolers, and our giveaways are limited to them.”
HBCUFest is open to students from all areas and is not limited to Charles County residents.
