LUSBY, Md. — A Washington, D.C., man has been charged with fraud after Maryland State Police say he provided false identification information during a traffic stop in Calvert County.
John Lee Onley, 29, was arrested Dec. 16, 2025, following a traffic stop along Route 4 near Cove Point Road in Lusby, according to charging documents filed in Calvert County District Court.
A Maryland State Police trooper reported observing a white Nissan Altima make an illegal and unsafe lane change, cutting off another vehicle and forcing the driver to brake abruptly. The trooper also noted the vehicle was traveling well above the posted speed limit and was displaying improper registration plates that were later determined to belong to a different vehicle, court records show.
During the stop, police said the driver did not have a valid driver’s license and initially provided a false name and date of birth to avoid identification and prosecution. The trooper later determined the information was inaccurate and confirmed the driver’s identity as Onley after he produced a Washington, D.C., identification card.
Further investigation revealed the vehicle was not properly registered or insured, and that the registration plates affixed to it did not belong to the vehicle, police said. Authorities also confirmed an active warrant for Onley related to a prior driving offense.
Onley was charged with fraud—personal identification to avoid prosecution, a misdemeanor under Maryland law. He was released on his own recognizance the same day.
A trial is scheduled for Jan. 30, 2026, in Calvert County District Court.
