Lexington Park, MD — Itโ€™s a sure sign of spring. Two of the three farmerโ€™s markets in St. Maryโ€™s County were open on Saturday, April 4.ย  And with it being Easter weekend many people were on the prowl for items for the table and to decorate their home for the next day. As a matter of fact, the farm producers decided to give the market an early open to take advantage of the timing of Easter this year.

The Home Grown Farm Market on Route 235 south of Lexington Park will have 20 vendors this year, according to St. Maryโ€™s County Agriculture and Seafood Manager Donna Sasscer. The Charlotte Hall market next to the library on Route 6 was also open this past Saturday. The market at the BAE Systems parking lot on Route 235 in California will be open in two weeks.

Some of the products available for the Home Grown Farm Marketโ€™s open on Saturday included fresh eggs, meats, lettuce, kale, Brussels sprouts, onions, baked goods, Easter arrangements, vegetableย  plants, annuals, hanging baskets, jams and jellies, cheese, ice cream and apples.

The producers at the market on Saturday included Russell Farm, Porpoise Creek Farm, Barry Roache, WAG Meats, Port of Leonardtown Winery, Bittersweet Fields, T & A Farm, Cecil Glass, Tranquil Time, Fairfield Farm and Melissa Morgan’s Jams/jellies.

But Saturday was just a sampling of things to come, according to Abby Trossbach of T&A Farm in Dameron, who is the Home Grown Farm Market manager. As the growing season progresses whatever is fresh from local farms will find its way to the markets, including the popular strawberries at the end of this month.

Trossbach, in addition to managing the operation, has 200 laying hens at her farm and was busy Saturday selling eggs. As if that doesnโ€™t keep her busy enough, she also teaches at St. Michaels School in Ridge.

The accompanying Photo Gallery includes pictures taken by Trossbach at the market open.
