ST. LEONARD, Md. — On Sunday, June 8, community members gathered at Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum for a meaningful and muddy tradition: the annual Bernie Fowler Wade-In, an event honoring both the Patuxent River and the legacy of clean water advocacy in Southern Maryland.
Among those who stepped into the water was Calvert County Commissioner Catherine Grasso, who joined attendees in wading shoulder to shoulder into the river until her feet were no longer visible — a playful yet powerful ritual meant to raise awareness about water clarity and the health of the Patuxent.
This year, Commissioner Grasso made it 48 inches into the river before losing sight of her feet — double last year’s measurement of 24 inches. That increase is more than symbolic; it points to hopeful signs of improving water quality and renewed efforts in environmental preservation throughout the region.
Also in attendance was Congressman Steny Hoyer, a longtime supporter of the Wade-In tradition who has participated in more than 34 of the event’s 38 years. His consistent presence is a testament to his deep commitment to environmental stewardship and his support of Sen. Fowler’s vision.

The Wade-In tradition was started by the late Sen. Bernie Fowler, a champion for the Chesapeake Bay, who believed that “clean water is a right, not a privilege.” His signature white sneakers, rolled-up pants and unwavering spirit became symbolic of a grassroots movement rooted in love for the land and water.
Now held annually at sites across Maryland, the Wade-In continues to serve as both an educational tool and a community celebration. It brings residents, officials and nature lovers together for a day of reflection, unity and commitment to keeping our rivers, creeks and shorelines clean for future generations.
As Commissioner Grasso, Congressman Hoyer and others stood knee-deep in the Patuxent, their quiet act of wading became a loud call for environmental responsibility — and a reminder that progress is possible when we step forward together.
