Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department members responded Saturday evening, Aug. 29 to a service call on a farm off Baptist Church Road for an animal rescue. Upon arrival, the rescue found a pet dog that was trapped in a drainage ditch pipe after chasing a rabbit into it.
The crew worked diligently to supply the dog with some fresh air, via an SCBA spare bottle with a blow by method, then digging out the top of the pipe that was about three-feet deep. The crew then utilized a sawzall to remove the top side of the pipe as far back as they could dig. Then the crew used a catch pole from the animal warden to grasp the dog and pull him out without injury.
This incident wasn’t something that the Mechanicsville volunteers do on a regular basis; the crew acted quickly and executed their plan within an hour.
