fire in maryland

LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Firefighters responded to a residential structure fire in the 22800 block of Newtowne Neck Road after smoke was reported coming from a wood stove in the basement.

The incident occurred Thursday morning, Jan. 15, 2026, when crews were dispatched around 10:23 a.m. and arrived to find smoke coming from the chimney of a two-story single-family home. Occupants advised that smoke was present inside the residence. Fire command was established, and a full exterior assessment was completed.

Firefighters determined the fire was contained to the chimney, with no extension into the rest of the home. Crews accessed the basement, which had no exterior entrance, and worked to extinguish the fire using chimney suppression techniques.

A water supply was established at the Port of Leonardtown Winery as a precaution. The fire was brought under control and later declared out. Command was terminated shortly after operations concluded.

No injuries were reported.
